25.

Tickle Goo

“Ow!” Lilibet was awakened by a jarring BUMP. “What the heck!?” She adjusted her bandaged wing and her hat. “I was just laying down and falling asleep. You getting tired, Sir André?” She stretched and yawned.

“Terribly sorry, ma’am.” He slowed his pace. “Not tired. We’re in Swamp Marsh. The ground is getting squishier.” He didn’t tell her she had been napping for over an hour. “I’ll try to be more careful, but you may wish to hold on.”

“Squishy ground?” She peered into the watery swamp where hundreds of squiggly bugs were slipping, sliding, circling, and seeming to dance in, out, and through the muck and tall reeds. “Don’t remember this on my map.” The insects were long, short, skinny, plump, but all shone with the most magnificent green iridescence. She thought, They look like dancing emeralds.

Gazing further into the marsh, she thought she heard giggles. “Are those bugs laughing?”

If you listened closely, it wasn’t frogs singing or crickets chirping; it was the laughter of the green bugs that filled the marsh.

Sir André himself giggled. “It’s impossible not to laugh with this muck tickling your feet.”

The shimmering bugs with their long black scraggly legs and arms were diving and jumping and swimming and splashing all around them.

Are they inviting me to join in? she wondered.

She studied her watch. She really, really wanted to feel the watery goo between her toes too.

“Sir André, do you think we have time for another stop? Just a teeny tiny one?”
